What Are The Challenges Of Business Process Management?
Although, Business Process Management promises success to organizations, it takes a lot of work to accomplish. The main reason is that people think BPM is a magic wand and can solve their problems with a single gesture; however, the reality is not like that. It requires commitment from top to bottom and hard work. In the end, the reward is great. But, like all good things, you have to earn it.

Below, we tried to summarize some of the main challenges that companies face.

Lack of Leadership

As you can see, the challenges of business process management are very real. The biggest challenge for most organizations is getting leaders to buy into the strategy and provide support for it. Without this buy-in, you won't be successful in implementing your processes, and KPIs will remain elusive.

In order to achieve your goals with BPM, you need a leader who can:
  • Define the vision and direction of the process
  • Set the tone for an organization (this is not just about being nice) but also provide resources.

Lack of Commitment

Commitment is a crucial ingredient in the success of any company, and it's no different in BPM. If there's a lack of commitment, then you'll probably find yourself struggling to get anything done.

This is because when your leaders don't believe in what you're doing or have no real interest in it, then they won't be willing to invest time and resources into making it happen. You should also keep an eye out for signs that this might be happening at your workplace - if you notice something suspicious or find yourself questioning why certain things are happening on a regular basis, then there could be some issues with leadership commitment levels that need addressing.

Process Complexity and Variability

When it comes to process complexity and variability, it's essential to understand the difference between the two. Process complexity refers to how complicated a particular process is for everyone involved in that activity. Process variability, on the other hand, describes how often or how much things change within that process.

If you don't understand these concepts, it can make it difficult for your team members to know exactly what they need to do at any given time—which can lead them down different paths while they try to complete their tasks.

Cumbersome for execution

People are always hesitant to change, and business process management (BPM) is all about change management — taking an existing process and making it better through automation, optimization or redesigning it altogether. There are usually three stakeholders involved in this process:
  • The business owner who wants to improve performance.
  • IT staff who know how to make it happen.
  • End users who have to learn how to use new software applications or systems.
If any of these stakeholders stay behind when their roles come, it may challenge the whole project.

Lack of Ownership of the Business Processes

Generally, this usually happens because a single person, department, team or business unit do not own the business process. This may be because:
  • The process is too big for one person to own (e.g., it crosses organizational boundaries and involves multiple stakeholders)
  • Different ways of performing the same task within teams/departments/business units exist.
  • No one feels responsible for making improvements to the process.
  • The business process is too complicated for one person to understand/own.
  • The process has too many stakeholders who don't agree on the desired outcome or how to achieve it.
Because BPM involves so many moving parts, getting all three stakeholders on board with a plan is essential — otherwise, you might end up with a system that no one uses because it doesn't meet their needs or expectations.

Conclusion
We hope that you now understand the challenges of business process management. If you're planning to implement BPM in your organization, it's important to know what can go wrong and how to avoid these pitfalls.
